“Yes/No” Episode Analysis

Hey everyone!

So… last nights episode of Glee…. AWESOME!

It was well worth the wait for all the great musical numbers, interesting storylines and new issues that our beloved characters had to face.

First off, I would like to give kudos to the cast for their great musical numbers. Songs that were in the show were:

  • Wedding Bell Blues
  • We Found Love
  • Summer Nights
  • Moves Like Jagger / Jumpin’ Jack Flash
  • The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face
  • Without You

I have to say I especially loved Moves Like Jagger / Jumpin’ Jack Flash because I love when the cast does a mash up of two great songs.

Now to move on to discuss the issues… this is of course what this blog is about!

When I was watching the show I took notes and wrote down some of the major issues and situations that I feel this episode focused on. These were:

  • Marriage
  • Proposals
  • Eloping
  • Disability
  • Dating
  • OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
  • Break-ups
  • War Heroes
  • Biracial Relationships
  • Young Love
  • Post-Secondary Dreams

Although all of these issues and situations are important and impact people in many ways, I am only going to choose a few to focus on and discuss.

  • I love this part of the story line. The fact that Will wanted to create the perfect wedding proposal for Emma made my heart melt! Every girl wants to be wooed when they get proposed to and the fact that will did not settle until he found the perfect way to propose made it worthwhile. It doesn’t mean that the man has to go above and beyond to impress the woman, but just making an effort to prove to her that she is the most important person in the world to you and that you will do anything to please her makes the proposal seem above and beyond. When Finn proposed to Rachel, he may not have done anything over the top and extreme, but it’s the little things that need to be spotted and taken into consideration. HE PROPOSED ON A STAGE! Being on stage is what completes Rachel so by Finn proposing on stage, he was trying to make her feel in a place where all her dreams could come true. I’m a believer that even the simplest proposals, if planned out right, can truly be the most romantic.

  • This subject on the show is something you may find I will focus on a lot if brought up into an episode because it is something that I can personally relate to, along with the issue that Emma has with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). If you watch Glee, you are obviously aware that Becky has Down syndrome but does not let that get in the way of her every day life. Although she tries not letting her disability get in the way of her life, she still encounters obstacles that prevent her from living her life to the fullest, or the way she would have lived it minus her disease. I feel a personal connection with this issue because I have a brother, Aaron, who is living with epilepsy and is unable to walk or talk. Though he may be living with a disease that will prevent him from ever fully living his life to the fullest, I do not try to treat him any differently than I would someone else. Of course there are times where I must treat him specifically different because of his limitations, the love, hate, jealousy and all the other emotions that siblings have towards one another are present in our relationship. At the end of the day, whether abled or disabled, everyone should be treated with respect no matter who they are or what they are capable of doing.

Biracial Relationships

  • In this episode when Sam and Mercedes are walking down the hallway
discussing their past, Sam asks Mercedes if he wont be with him because he is white. Though this comment seemed rather passive in the episode, I still think it is something that should be discussed. In this day and age, being in a biracial relationship is not something that is uncommon, but there are still people who are fully against ‘the mixing of cultures’. Personally, I feel if you love someone then that is all that matters, but the fact that Glee writers decided to include this in the script proves that it is still an issue that is around. I would like for the writers to include a little more in the script about this so that we can have a further discussion and create a debate on why this issue is still around.

Post-Secondary Dreams

  • This plot basically applies to anyone. Whether you are planning on going to school after high school or even getting a job or joining the army, you have aspirations for where you want to see your life in the future. In this episode we focus on Finn wanting to join the army (this is pretty much because he wanted to be the man he thought his father was) and Rachel and Kurt discussing going to Ne Ada (I’m not too sure on the spelling…. I can’t find it anywhere so if you know it, let me know!). There may be a chance that both Kurt and Rachel will not be accepted into Ne Ada (again, I apologize for the spelling), and now they have to start planning on what they will do with their lives now that their plans have not gone in the direction the had originally planned. There are so many people that are in high-school, or even graduating high-school, that are still unsure of what they want to do with their lives or have run into a situation that have made them completely change their plans. I am one of those people. I graduated high school wanting to be a Phys. Ed. teacher, then changed my major in University to English, and now I am currently in college completing a Journalism degree. I feel that I have finally found my path in life and I’m happy with where I see my future headed. You just have to follow your dreams and follow your heart.

I hope you all like this first official blog post following last night’s episode. I know its long, but I am trying to make sure that I write things that are for everyone and try to touch upon situations in all of your lives.

I will be posting more things soon so don’t forget to check back every so often!

***If anyone wants me to expand on or discuss certain issues, just send a comment and I will be happy to write about it for you***
